On Boussinesq and Coriolis coefficients and their derivatives in transient pipe flows

A rigorous analytical justification is developed for a simplification that widely used in one-dimensional simulations of steady and unsteady flows pipes, namely treating the flow as 'plug flow' which cross-sectional variations axial velocity are neglected except consequential shear forces on pipe walls. The proof obtained without assuming nearly incompressible and, indeed, it found plug approximation remains good even compressible at moderate, subsonic speeds. In more general analyses, explicit allowance sometimes made influence (i) Boussinesq coefficient ? (ii) its rate change ??/?x. Typically, such analyses discard terms ??/?x basic equations proceed using alone. This done grounds no method evaluating available. It shown this paper discarding not only unnecessary, but actually leads to less accurate outcomes than simply flow. process derive has spin-off benefit shedding light alternative methods integrating source over cross-section. Although primary purpose demonstrate use approximations can be justified rigorously most flows, brief attention also paid cases where potential mislead.
